Jane Goodale is a production assistant for the Diane Roberts TV talk show. Eddie Alden is the show’s womanizing producer. Ray Brown becomes the show’s new executive producer. Even though he’s in a long term relationship, he and Jane start an affair. This develops to the point where he dumps his current girlfriend and asks Jane to move in with him. Then after Jane has ended her lease, he dumps her. Jane is forced to share Eddie’s apartment, as she can’t find anywhere else to live.  Jane develops the ‘new cow’ theory that men won’t commit because they’re always looking for new conquests. Jane’s friend Liz, who works for M, a magazine for men asks her to write a column about male behavior from a female perspective. They create the persona of the elderly “Dr . Marie Charles” to be Jane’s alter ego and the listed author of the articles. On July 16, 2000 [52:35 to 52:41] the issue of “M” magazine containing “Dr. Marie Charles” first article hits the newsstands.  The column becomes a huge hit. Diane Roberts wants Marie Charles as a guest on her show. Ray asks her out for New Year’s Eve, but stands her up and Jane learns his girlfriend is none other than Diane Roberts. She argues with Eddie over the new cow theory, but after seeing the love between her sister and husband after her sister miscarries, tells Diane that Dr. Charles will be on the show.  She had intended to do the interview over the phone, but at the last minute appears on the show and confesses. She says no theory can be one size fits all for all men. She races after Eddie and they kiss.

A decent romantic comedy. The leads work well together and have good chemistry. Just enough quirky cinematic tricks to keep it interesti ng.

Date given in film at 52:37, where if you zoom in and freeze, you can see the caption of an article which appeared in The New York Times on this date titled “Amid Race Profiling Claims, Asian-Americans Avoid Labs”.

On July 13, 1956 [the entire film] a murder trial is held in NYC. Initially only Juror 8 has any doubts about the defendant’s guilt. He establishes that a witness could not have heard the accused say “I’m going to kill you” to the victim due to the noise from a passing elevated train. Juror 8 also shows that this witness could not have gotten to the door in time to see the accused run out of the murder apartment. Juror 8 later shows that under stress the accused might have forgotten the name of the movie he had gone to see at the time of the murder. Several of the jurors evidence ethnic bias against the accused. Juror 9 shows that a female witness who supposedly saw the murder wore glasses, but probably was not wearing them when she saw the killing. The last juror finally changes his vote, giving a unanimous “n ot guilty”.

In the film at 8:36 mention is made of an Indians at Yankees baseball game, which occurred on this date. It is established in conversation that it is a Friday, which July 13 was in 1956.

Bond resigns from MI6 and goes to Venice with Lynd. Bond learns that the funds were never returned to the treasury and that Lynd is stealing them. He pursues her to a building under renovation where she allows herself to drown, as the building collapses Mr. White leaves with the money. Bond learns that Mr. White’s organization had kidnapped Lynd’s boyfriend and had forced her to steal the money. Bond finds a message from Lynd with Mr. White’s phone number, which Bond uses to track him down, introducing himself with the classic line, “The name’s Bond, James Bond”.

This is the surprisingly good first of t he Bond “reboot” movies.  This Bond has a harder edge than some of his incarnations. This film doesn’t disappoint action-wise, but keeps the gadgetry to a minimum.

At a reunion of the 509th bomber group, Jesse Marcel flashes back to 1947 when there was a big thunderstorm. A few days later Mac Brazzel, a rancher brings material to the sheriff that he thinks might be from a UFO. This material displays unusual properties. Marcel and Sherman Carson go to the site. Marcel demonstrates the stuffs unusual properties to his family.  On July 8, 1947 Col. Blanchard, the base commander issues a press release that a UFO had been found. [22:23 to 29:40]  Marcel is ordered to fly to Ft. Worth where the story is put out that it’s a weather balloon and he’s ordered not to talk about it. At the reunion Marcel talks to a local radio announcer who says that when they tried to follow up with Brazel, Brazzel was arrested, interrogated for three days, and perhaps bribed to change his story to say it wasn’t a UFO. Marcel hears a story that a spotter plane found a second site where three alien bodies and one survivor of the crash were found. Marcel learns that a top secret commission was set up to deal with this. Sec. Forrestal went to Area 51 and the living alien passed him a mental message that others were coming just before it died. Forrestal later died under mysterious circumstances that could either have been suicide or murder. Marcel is told all this by mystery man Townsend who had been watching him and basically leaves him with the thought that Marcel has no proof, just stories.

An unusual film. It telling its story veers between a documentary and tabloid journalism.

You can’t decide if it really happened or was just a story.

Car #3 wins several Gran Prix races, including the French Gran Prix on July 7, 1908 [1:07 to 4:10]. After a crash it ends up in a junkyard. When the owner plans to sell it for scrap, Jeremy and Jemima Potts beg their eccentric inventor father Caractacus Potts to buy the car. The Potts family meets Truly Scrumptious and Caractacus almost sells his musical candy “Toot sweets” to her father, Lord Scrumptious until a dog invasion of the factory in response to the sound. Caractacus’s hair cutting machine fails, but he makes enough in tips as a musical performer to buy the car, which he rebuilds into a splendid machine, which they name “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. The Potts family and Trudy go on a picnic at the shore, where Caractacus tells a story about Baron von Bomburst of Vulgar ia, who wants to steal Chitty. Pirates working for Bomburst attack, but Chitty becomes a boat and they escape. Agents of Bomburst kidnap Caractacus’s father. While giving chase Chitty drives off a cliff and converts into a flying car. They fly to Vulgaria, where children are illegal. The Potts family is hidden by the toymaker, but Chitty, Jeremy and Jemima are captured and taken to the Baron’s castle.  Caractacus and Trudy are smuggled into the castle disguised as life size dolls. They, along with the kingdom’s children, freed from the dungeons overcome the Baron. They fly back home in Chitty and the children finish the story with Caractacus and Truly getting married. Caractacus demurs due to their different class status until Lord Scrumptious offers to buy the “toot sweets” as a dog treat.  Caractacus proposes to Trudy and they are engaged. As they return to tell the children the news, the car rises into the air and begins to fly.

If my memory is correct, this is the very first movie I was ever taken to see in a theater.
